Watch Out For Whales in the Bay

It finally feels like spring is here! And that means North Atlantic right whales are spending time just offshore.

Right whales are critically endangered; however, these amazing animals can be seen with consistency in and around Cape Cod Bay between January and April (peak occurrence is typically March and April – right now!).

This year, according to NOAA Fisheries, there has been an unusually high number of right whales sighted near the Cape Cod Canal and in Cape Cod Bay, including two mother-calf pairs. Boat and ship strikes are a major threat to these whales, as they spend much of their time at or just below the surface making them very difficult to see. Boaters, please take it slow, designate a lookout, and read NOAA Fisheries press release below for more information.

NOAA Fisheries issued this release yesterday, which has a ton of great information and helpful links: Notice to Cape Cod Boaters: Watch Out for Whales (PDF)
